Make me over

Like learning to dress in a fashion-sensitive way, make-up is a self-taught art. But often we forget to put in the necessary practice to keep those skills sharp.
If your make-up sessions aren’t producing the desired effect, perhaps it’s time to invest a little time in turning yourself into a make-up artist extraordinaire.
Whether it’s a make-up counter lesson or one-on-one lesson, go armed with a notepad and be pro-active. You’ll be a DIY diva in no time.

Glamazon makeover
Lisa Haynes receives the rock star treatment to go from drab to fab
If the prospect of a masterclass is daunting, in-store pampering is the ideal opportunity to pick up tips.
The Signature Rock Star One Stop makeover at Filthy Gorgeous in Debenhams, £60 (www.filthygorgeouslondon.com) feels like you’re getting ready in your bedroom with friends – except these pals are oracles of beauty advice.
The key is to not sit back but ask advice on every step of the transformation. I wanted to go from desk drab to uber-glam in my 60 minutes and eyes were key.
Make-up artist Clare Perkins tells me the smoky eye is by far the most popular request for a night out.
Eyeliner is often where mistakes are made but Clare says you don’t have to aim for precision with a liner – let your lashes be the guide with lots of little strokes, rather than one clean line.
Smoky eyes don’t have to be dark greys or blacks either, the look can be created with a multitude of shades. Clare is a whizz at recommending colours to complement my eyes and I’m wowed by the results using shades I’d never normally choose.
Top tips
  • Strip lashes are a great glam quick fix but individual extensions added to corners can last a couple of weeks.
  • Use an eye primer or trace of concealer over lids as a base to make eyes look brighter and give your shadow extra hold for a night on the tiles.
  • Use brushes for shadow – use a sweep motion for a soft effect or push for more intense pigment.
Beautiful bride
Samantha Southcott prepares for wedding bells with her bridal makeover
Tressed to impress with a glamorous up-do and diamante tiara, I needed sophisticated make-up to complement my bridal look.
Celebrity make-up artist Kate Hughes (www.itsallaboutyou.uk.net), who has a client list as long as a wedding dress train, transformed my lacklustre, sun-starved skin into a glowing masterpiece.
Flawless skin is key for a wedding. For longevity and to give my skin a fresh, glowing look, Kate applied a primer with her fingers over my regular moisturiser.
A lot of people ask: What comes first, foundation or concealer? Kate recommends using something light, and then putting concealer over the top to cover any blemishes.
Kate says foundation is about evening out the skin tone, not coverage.
I learnt that professional make-up stays on all day, and it’s all about application and blending. Just remember to buy your chosen lip colour and pop it in your purse before you reach for the bouquet – it’s the only touch up you’ll need for a photo finish.
